I have a pupating GSW whose bottom-end silk has dislodged. However, I have seen two or three giant swallowtails fly through the yard. The species was historically considered to occur in the western United States and into South America. Permission for non-commercial purposes is generally allowed after contacting Stan stan "at" performance-vision. I recommend smaller lightweight cages because they are easier to clean and dry…there tends to be more disease issues in large enclosures: Caterpillar Cage Ideas. I have not seen a monarch this year, and neither has anyone that I have talked to.

For the other caterpillar with this common name, see Papilio demodocus. Many swallowtail caterrpillars are bird poop mimics in their early instars, but the Giant Swallowtail keeps it up through the entire series of larval stages.
Hopefully some Monarchs will show up before long.
